Ensus Bioethanol plant update Spring 2009

At a time when good news is in short supply, it's nice to be able to report a positive story. The construction of the Ensus BioEthanol plant on Teeside is continuing at pace and the plant is scheduled to open on time in the Summer of 2009. When fully commissioned the plant will use about 1.2million tonnes of wheat, all of which will be supplied by Glencore Grain UK Ltd. As well as this it will produce nearly 400,000 tonnes a year of high quality distillers grains for the animal feed market.

Ensus Bioethanol plant update Summer 2008

Construction of the UK’s first world scale bio-ethanol production plant at Wilton on Teeside has continued to progress well through the summer. The plant is scheduled to start production during 2009 and will use 1.2million tonnes of wheat a year, all supplied by Glencore Grain UK Ltd.

Activity on the site has grown as the building work has developed and by early 2009 it is expected that there will be around 800 construction workers involved with the project.

At the moment the civil works associated with the grain reception area and the fermentation tanks are progressing well, and the installation of the pipe work into the pipe bridges is on schedule. Deliveries of equipment for the plant have begun and the recruitment of specialist staff to run the plant is progressing well.

The technology used in the plant is highly efficient and the process that converts the wheat into ethanol also creates a substantial quantity of a high protein animal feed known as DDGS, and also carbon dioxide which will be used in the UK food and beverage market.

Ensus Bioethanol plant update Spring 2008

Construction of the Ensus plant at the Wilton site is progressing well on many fronts. Foundations are now in place and the Civil Contractor has released the whole side of the fermenter area and work has started on erection of the pre cast bases. The steelwork for the modular pipe bridge is largely complete and erection of pipe into the modular bridge sections has started and the big lifts should start at the end of April.

Planning for Commissioning is now underway with key resources in place and required additional resource being recruited.

Ensus Bioethanol plant update Autumn 2007

Work on the UK’s first wheat powered bioethanol plant is well underway at the Wilton International industrial complex near Teeside.

The site for the Ensus Bioethanol plant has now been cleared and the piling work for the foundations is almost complete. The Civil works will begin very shortly and the project is still on target for completion in the 1st Quarter of 2009.

The first two photographs below show the piling work underway at the Southern end of the site where the grain silos will be located. The third picture is of the proposed location of the office complex to the west of the site (with a lovely view of the power station behind).

When the Ensus plant is operational in early 2009 it will use around 1.2 million tonnes of wheat a year and will also produce 400,000 tonnes of high protein animal feed.

Ground breaking development for bio-ethanol

Defra Secretary of State, David Miliband, MP, has marked the start of construction of the UK’s first major wheat-to-fuel facility, with a visit to the Ensus bio-ethanol site at Wilton on Teesside last week (11 May 2007).

The ground-breaking ceremony keeps the huge renewable fuel project on target to commence production in spring 2009 - utilising over a million tonnes of wheat a year from the coming season’s drilling onwards.

“Every country in the world has to find a way to lower carbon emissions, and undoubtedly those who do so first will be the ones to reap the dividends,” said Mr Miliband. “The involvement of companies such as Ensus is something to be celebrated and is very, very important for national and international efforts to combat climate change.”

Keith Davies of Glencore Grain UK, which will be the exclusive buyers of wheat for the huge Ensus plant, added: “With the construction of the Ensus plant underway, bio-ethanol is now a reality for UK growers and a real market to fulfil. This is a fantastic opportunity for growers to secure a guaranteed market for wheat. Our long-term supply agreement with Ensus will create the potential for a decade of innovation for the farming industry.

“A plant of this magnitude will redefine the dynamics of the UK wheat market, and have a positive effect on stabilising UK wheat prices,” he added.
